Throughout a practice that spans art criticism, painting, research, and poetry, Mualla’s writing has been published extensively in Arab and foreign press and his canvases have been exhibited throughout the Middle East and Europe. His figurative canvases feature rounded figures with exaggerated proportions. Their eyes and expressions exude emotions of fear and anxiety and their bodies are oftentimes distorted.
During his formative years, he studied the history of art in Siena, Italy and Arabic literature in Latakia, Syria. He currently holds various positions including cultural heritage expert at UNESCO and is a member of the International Association of Art Critic (AICA). Moualla has also participated in many international biennials, and has had solo exhibitions both east and west, including ‘Stories of War and Peace’ at the National Museum of Aleppo in Syria and ‘Silence 5’ at the University of Göttingen, Germany.
His artwork can be found in major institutions including museums in Italy, Romania, the United Arab Emirates and Germany. He has also written 16 books on art history, philosophy, and criticism.
